What Is a UUID?

A UUID is a 128-bit identifier like 550e8400-e29b-41d4-a716-446655440000 — practically guaranteed unique without a central registry. Version 4 UUIDs are randomly generated, making them ideal for database primary keys, session tokens, file names and distributed systems where auto-increment IDs would collide.

UUID v4 vs v1 — what is the difference?

v4 is fully random; v1 embeds a timestamp and MAC address. v4 is preferred for privacy and simplicity — this tool generates v4.

Can two UUIDs be identical?

Theoretically yes, practically never — with 2122 possible v4 values, collisions are astronomically unlikely.

Are generated UUIDs truly random?
